The spooky season is upon us, and as September ushered in the full-fledged pumpkin spice days, cash registers were ringing big numbers.

According to National Retail Federation (NRF)Consumer concerns over the continued spread of the COVID-19 delta variant have shifted attention back to physical goods as families have cooled on experiences and services such as travel, dining or entertainment. The US Census Bureau and the NRF – which use different methodologies in their calculations – reported growth in retail sales in September. Not only were sales slightly stronger than in August, but year-over-year sales were up 11% according to the NRF and 13.9% according to the Census Bureau.

“Despite the lingering challenges of the global pandemic, supply chain and labor shortages, retailers and their partners have shown resilience and ingenuity to build the workforce. work, assets and systems to serve their customers and the communities where they operate, ”says NRF. We have achieved record imports this year and are confident that collectively we can meet these challenges to ensure a healthy and happy holiday season. “

The NRF says overall retail sales for the first nine months of 2021 are up 14.5% from a year ago.

Going into the second half of October, the organization says that Halloween consumer spending is also expected to increase this year. The NRF says Halloween spending is expected to hit $ 10.14 billion in 2021, up from $ 8.05 billion last year.

Taken together, all of this data bodes well for the start of the third quarter earnings season for the toy industry next week.
